On Thursday, the San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary made an announcement that Shaun Hill, not Alex Smith, will be the starting quarterback in the preseason opener Friday night against the Broncos.

But he also said that it did not mean Hill has won the competition with Smith for the starting job during regular season. The coach has not made his final decision on who will start next week, and Smith also will receive work with the first unit against the Broncos.

Why is it so hard for Singletary to make a selection between the two quarterbacks? A most likely reason is that neither quarterback has distinguished himself as the clear-cut starter during training camp practice, even though Singletary always said that he was with the progression they are making. So we will have to wait, maybe to the last moment, for the choice to be made.
